Tom Strzalkowski won a scholarship to a prestigious university that otherwise would have been out of reach. Alex Kovacs developed a deeper bond with his oldest boy, Stephen, (and now with his younger son, Jared) when father and son learned the sport side-by-side.
Both men traveled the world, participating in some of the most elite fencing competitions and soaking up other cultures. Along the way, they learned skills that catapulted them to success, not only in fencing but also in everyday life. Discipline. Respect. How to face a challenge, think it through and come out on top.
“Every person I ever knew that was a fencer took those same skills into their personal life and succeeded with them,” Alex said. “They were never defeated by a failure. They learned to succeed from the mistakes.”
With a combined 50-plus years experience in fencing, Tom and Alex have emerged as premier coaches for the next generation of fencers.
“I’ve had so many great coaches,” Alex said. “It’s our job now to pass on that which we have learned from all these people.”
Fencing is a sport that has been described as a “game of physical and mental chess.” It’s a fast-paced sport, derived from the ancient art of swordplay, with split-second decisions. Most anyone can do it. Never mind if you’re not a world-class athlete. Flex your mental muscles and you can have that world of opportunity opened to you.
The goal of the Fencing Academy of Denver is to prepare students for national and international tournaments which could assist them with admissions to Universities and possibly earn them college fencing scholarships and potentially a place on the U.S. Olympic Team.
Our programs give adults and children a unique and real opportunity to pursue this sport to the highest national and international levels, if they so desire.
“You can experience the whole world,” Tom said. “The sky’s the limit.”
At any level, continuing with the program will allow fencers to learn what it means to devote themselves to serious goals.
“With every touch you win there’s a little bit of satisfaction,” Alex said. “It is a very satisfying feeling that you set up to win.”
Start fencing today. Experience the difference it will make in your life. Seize the world.
